How to Enhance Your Leadership Skills

As a leader you are required to be at full pelt all the time and it can feel relentless.

From back-to-back meetings, competing priorities and the constant pull of other people’s demands, it’s easy to move from one task to the next without ever pausing to think about your style and how people are being impacted by you.

This is a common mistake that leaders make.

The Art of Resilience

If you consider professional athletes, they spend hours reviewing footage of their matches: the wins, the losses, their own performance, their competitors’. Every shot and every move gets analysed, and that’s how they improve.

This isn’t just good practice — it’s part of what makes athletes resilient. The Resilience Institute describes resilient people as moving through four stages of activity:

  1. In flow – performing at your best
  2. Bounce – switching off and reflecting- closing the laptop, leaving the office on time
  3. learning from the experience by adapting
  4. reconnecting with the next challenge

Instead leaders tend to move from one high-pressure moment straight into the next.

But by building the habit to reflect, you clear your mind, process any lingering emotion, and sharpen your thinking for the next time.

The Habit of Reflection

Without the habit of reflection, you miss the chance to learn from your experience — and end up repeating the same mistakes instead of learning from them.

The good news is that reflection doesn’t need to be time-consuming or complicated.

It can be as simple as taking a few minutes at the end of the day to think back on a meeting you chaired, a conversation with a direct report, or a presentation you gave. Ask yourself: What went well? What would have made it better?

Write the answers down. Putting pen to paper forces clarity in a way that just thinking rarely does, and it creates a record you can actually look back on.

Done consistently, this small habit compounds. You become more self-aware, more attuned to your own patterns and blind spots. You walk into similar situations better prepared next time. And, perhaps most importantly, you carry less stress, because you’re not just reacting to leadership — you’re actively learning from it.

Leaders Don’t Improve By Accident

Athletes don’t improve by accident. Neither do leaders. The difference is simply whether you make time to watch the replay.
